We all agree that the current round of Republican whining about the polls is all about them trying to keep their folks from throwing in the towel. So this week's talking point is all about how the polls are biased in favor of Obama. But there is another reason behind this current effort to discredit the polling, and it has to do with legitimizing the outcome when they steal the election on November 6.
The polls ARE wrong in one sense: they do not and can not take account of the impact of voter suppression and intimidation. Remember: pollsters go to you. But in the election, you have to go to the polls. Therefore, sampling and multiplying to predict how the population will behave has a serious flaw in it.
So if they are successful in stealing the election, they will be able to say, "We told you those polls were wrong."
We can't let it be that close. If we're up by 2 we need to be up by 5. If we're up by 10 we need to be up by 15. The last thing I want to read on November 7 is: "We told you so."
