This is obviously going out to RKBA, but there is no accusation involved. I have a feeling that the efforts of the NRA to foster a certain mindset are so pervasive and successfull that a great many of the Second Amendment afficianados parrot NRA tactics and arguments reflexively (or at least come close to them). But in all fairness to the rest of us, asking us to differentiate between the genuine and the near miss faux is simply not a reasonable approach to discussion. When I hear something from the main cadre of RKBA DKos activists that is clearly original, I focus closely, and when it even vaguely sounds like anything I'm prepared to hear regurgitated I receive it dismissively (and sometimes very dismissively).
But I'm really more interested in trying to make a point for the future than one about the past. Our society is not going back. It's not going back in any number of traditionally progressive areas, and anti RKBA is clearly one of them. Fight it and you lose. In fact you not only lose on the direction of the future, but on influencing the details of the path we take going forward. The alternative for RKBA folks, of course, is to accept the inevitabilty of changes that cannot be defeated, while trying to preserve everything that does not absolutely have to be lost. Adopting the alternative begins with policing yourself, and then policing yourselves. When you feel something coming on that even vaguely resembles a cliche, stop and say "that sounds like an NRA talking point" and then either find a new phrasing for that old idea, or, preferably genuinely move on to something new. And feel free to be ready to openly critique your group members in the same way, because it's becomimg tiresomely repetitive to have the rest of us do it for you.
While there are no small number of firearms and firearms proponents in Europe, the Old World has little remaining, if anything, that qualifies as gun "Rights" as we have historically known them. When our transition will be complete is still unclear, but what we as a society will come to accept as appropriate in our relationship to guns is far less so because of the path that Europe has already staked out for us.
While we may or may not have fewer guns in the hands of fewer people, we will have far fewer persons who take their gun ownership so cavilerly. "Concealed carry" will become ever more so restricted on the basis of demonstrated need. A fixation with all things firearm will be viewed askance. What weapons we "desire" will increasingly be viewed as a red flag. Collectors will be evaluated to seperate the genuine from hoarders. Use will certainly be accomdated, but our current carte blanche approach is simply not appropriate in any sense, and will be deemed such. If you want target guns be prepared to demonstrate some proficieny in some competitive category. The current all too often occurence of kids (or whoever) driving around shooting at shit just because they can will clearly someday no longer be tolerated.
When the vast majority of us here should feel free to call "That sounds like an NRA talking point" will be subject to refinement as time goes on. But a whole lot of things are no longer even a close call. "People kill people, not guns" (and we've all heard this one in such a nauseatingly large number of versions that it needs to forever, and however, and always be banned from the face of the earth) is an NRA talking point. "Let's give the families a few days to grieve"? Get Real! Intentionally deflecting the discussion to any subject but the current object of outrage and sorrow? I'm sorry, you're such unrepentant NRA that you're probably a plant. Picking out a minor technical point and using it to start a comment thread that no one but a true gun nut would have even the slightest interest in. Really? You can't do any better than that?
Etc. Etc. Etc.
That sounds like an NRA talking point to me!
