So, it looks like the gunnies worst fears have come true. That map, bravely published a few weeks ago lists everyone who has a handgun permit in several New York counties. There was much dissention from the gun community about their "privacy being invaded". The publishers got death threats from the same "law abiding" community, and eventually had to hire armed guards to feel safe from the "law abiding" gun owners.
Now jump ahead a few weeks. One of the houses that was on the map got burglarized. Guess what comes next?
A NY State Senator (R-Gunfuck), immediately blames the map. To him, the "innocent" gun nuts that own mass murder machines, who contribute to his campaign warchest, share no blame when someone tries to grab their guns. Oh no, it's that dastardly, obscene, commu-liberal plot known as "Freedom of the Press". That the newspaper would bravely publish the identities of people who are dangers to the community is clearly a conspiracy by George Soros, Stalin, King George III, and Mohammed to undermine good American values. Like owning guns and shooting children.
Sorry, I couldn't contain my disgust for him. Anyway, he is proposing a series of bills in the NY Senate to make such information private. Who has a gun permit would no longer be public information, available to everyone. The information should be protected, as gun owners have to be protected from their own decisions now.
The lucky thing is this gun owner in question wasn't a complete and utter moron, and had a gun safe. If he didn't, it would be another gun owner letting a criminal get a gun. See, this is why gun owners are stupid. They say "criminals will always get guns". Let's ask ourselves, where do they get guns? They steal them from gun owners. If gun owners didn't exist, the supply of guns would be almost completely cut off.
Personally, I think all counties should publish all gun permits, including concealed carry permits. These data are important for public health. We need to know who among us has the capacity to kill with a gun. We need to know which of our neighbors is the next Lanza or Loughner. I know I don't want my children around anyone who has a gun in his house.
Second, we need to require all gun owners have a gun safe, and an ammunition safe. All guns are to be stored in the gun safe, at all times. Same with the ammo safe. We need both regular and spot inspections. Police should be able to check for gun safety at all times, with unannounced, random checks for weapons and ammo storage.
Third, we need strict liability for weapons being stolen. It should be a felony to have your weapon stolen from you. You took the chance to have a weapon of death in your house, now you pay for it when it gets stolen. Additionally, the gun owner should be responsible for all crimes committed with the weapon. The owner bought it, made it available to criminals, now he must sit in the nest he has made. If the gun is used to kill someone, charge both the shooter and the owner with murder. Simple.
These simple laws, that can be enacted by Executive Order immediately, will make it a huge headache to own a gun. It will also make it very costly. The cheapest gun safes go for at least a few hundred bucks each. Two of them will put gun ownership beyond the reach of most people. Not to mention the thought of life in prison if your gun gets stolen and used to kill someone.
Simple steps to reduce gun violence. And watch gunnies get their jimmies rustled and watch their heads explode
