A short diary about a short comment...
Breaking his six year streak of silence, Justice Clarence Thomas today uttered his first words during argument since 2006... to tell a joke. According to SCOTUSblog's paraphrase, Justice Thomas implied that a lawyer who attended his alma mater, Yale Law, may be seen as incompetent rather than competent due to his place of schooling. According to Business Insider, observers and members of the Court alike were stunned by Justice Thomas's comment.
Personally, if I was breaking an historic streak, I would have said something meaningful. Then again, a joke might be the most meaningful contribution he's yet made, and carries symbolic importance for the man who is himself one of the cruelest and biggest jokes in the Supreme Court's history.
