As you have no doubt read, a 15-year-old shot and killed the rest of his family in New Mexico yesterday. (here's an account from the NY Daily News)
In addition to being utterly tragic, this incident "shoots down" two of the Right Wing's favorite talking points: the myth of the responsible gun owner, and the shifting of blame onto secular society.
Responsible gun owner: I have a hard time trusting "responsible gun owners" when two of the mass shootings in the past month were both carried out by children using their parents' weapons. If gun owners can't prevent themselves from taking their own bullet, I sure as heck don't trust them to keep me or anyone else safe.
Secondly, Focus on the Family's insistence that the Sandy Hook tragedy was all the fault of getting God out of public schools. In the New Mexico incident, the murderer was homeschooled, and his father was a pastor. Maybe he was worshipping the wrong god. Or maybe deadly weapons are far too available.
