I'm one of those many, many liberal democrats - far to the left of our president, even - who are unfortunately represented in the Senate by Mitch McConnell. Today, with the coming showdown on Senate rules, I felt compelled to write Mitch not about his medieval policies, his party's slavish dedication to monied, white theocrats, or his general disregard for what is best for the commonweal of the Commonwealth.
That is to say, I wrote him concerning filibuster reform.
Senator,
I write to encourage you to work with Senator Reid and your colleagues across the aisle to implement filibuster reform in the Senate. Frankly, each of our Senators make a great deal of money and should have to be physically present in the chamber to deliver a filibuster - none of this "threatened filibuster" foolishness that has been devised to allow you to spend more time out raising money and less time doing the jobs that the voters sent you to do.
With all due respect, Senator, I hope that you are challenged in your next race and that you lose said challenge decisively. Many voters in Kentucky have had enough of your grandstanding - both where filibusters and filibuster reform are concerned and otherwise. I am one of those voters, and I plan to work to ensure you are looking for a job in 2014. While no amount of contrition for your hypocritical obstructionism could encourage me to support you or to tone down my opposition, as an eternal optimist who looks always for the best in people, I would imagine that you might want to demonstrate a grain of humanity and improve Senate rules for your successors.
With best regards on this the second full day of President Barack Hussein Obama's second term as President,
khowell
