Cong. members Blumenauer (D-OR) and Polis (D-CO) have just introduced two pieces of legislation which would remove most federal criminal penalties against pot in States where it is legal; namely Colorado and Washington.
The bills would tax weed at 50% of the sale price, require permits for its production, and remove pot from the Controlled Substance Act. The Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms would become the Bureau of Alcohol, Marijuana, Tobacco and Firearms to handle permittting and taxes. Exporting weed to other states would remain illegal. They've also produced a report on legal weed titled The Path Forward. Here's the best links I can manage, first to the legislation:

My plans are to start making contributions of $4.20 to all my favorite congress people, and alerting them what that contribution means; there's an active voter who wants them to support these bills. Please consider similiar activities.
Also thank you very much to everyone who read and/or recommended my prior diary on drugs, The Monster We Created. I really appreciate your attention.
