Y'know, folks... I'm often more than a little slow in the uptake. My MOS is that, no matter what, I try to allow the furor over an issue to die down a bit before taking up a mantle of outrage, anger or just garden variety pissed-off-ed-ness.
However, this Sullivan High School “Traditional” prom business in Indiana — and specifically Diana Medley's statement to the media — has been bugging me for over a week now. [It's at: http://mywabashvalley.com/... ]
It took that long for me to be sure my gag reflex would not overcome me long enough to watch the video when Ms. Medley expressed in the rigid, unyielding terminology of the Krystyunists stating “sexual preference” and “I believe that it's a choice...” and “I don't agree with it...”
It was the exasperated look at the reporter and her response when Ms. Medley was asked the disjointed question if she believes that “[the] ...gay person... do you consider them... [to] have some sort of purpose...?” that clinched it for me: “I don't... I personally don't; I'm sorry, I just... I don't understand it.” The woman began speaking from a superior point-of-view and her condescending attitude toward gay folk should NOT be allowed in the realm of vulnerable teenagers, capping her position with, “I just don't understand it.”
Well, Shugah... You're NOT going to understand it if you don't even make an attempt to! And no, you're NOT "sorry" as in making an apology. In the South, we have another use for the word "sorry," as in "worthless"; this is what you have admitted yourself to be! Where now, is YOUR "purpose"? This is also what the Krystyunists do over and over and over: They shut down all discussion with an “I don't understand it,” while conveniently omitting the rest of that sentence: “...and I'm not even going to try.” That bugged me the most and will likely continue to bug me for a long time. It's these Churchees who believe that Krystyun Right is the ONLY Right and “...don't worry, I'm going to teach you what I believe and, if you don't agree with it, you're going to Hell. I don't care that this is a 'public' school, it's MY way or the HIGHWAY!” Also, it's their delivery raises pity to an art form. I wouldn't have known that had I not seen the video.
Way back when, there was a [Big “C”] Christian, Saint Francis of Assisi, who entreated for God to:
...grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled, as to console;
to be understood, as to understand;
to be loved, as to love.
For it is in giving that we receive.
It is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
and it is in dying that we are born to Eternal Life.
It's one thing to not Get It... It's a whole 'nother thing to not even try.
