So they passed this awful mining bill just now.
They made it about jobs.
It's not.
I'm the son of a developer.
I'm pro development.
I'm pro business.
I'm even pro mining.
But I'm against this bill.
Supporting business, jobs, development etc. doesn't mean being irresponsible and destroying the environment.
The republicans (minus Dale Schultz) love to talk about the miner on our flag.
They love to act like it's this mining bill or no mining.
Well it's not.
The choice is between responsible mining, responsible development, responsible business and completely gutting environmental protection.
When we make a development we make that development with a great deal of consideration to the environment we build it in. There are laws protecting that environment. That doesn't stop us from developing. It just means we have to play fair.
This mining bill means that the mining companies don't have to play fair and for me, that's a crime.
It's not a crime because I'm against mining, it's a crime because I'm against irresponsible, unethical mining.
For example, you can be ok with fishing but not ok with overfishing till there are no more fish.
It might make some jobs in the short term but in the long term it's gonna drive people, development and jobs away. It will poison the land and water. It will allow some people to not play fair at the expense of everybody else and that's not ok.
So yea, there's a miner on that flag and I'm happy for it. But that doesn't mean that miner can do whatever he wants.
IT'S NOT ALL OR NOTHING.
It's not mining bill or no mining.
It's a question of having standards.
Just because you don't shit where you eat doesn't mean you are against eating.
