Fr Andrew Greeley passed. He was a brilliant sociologist, & wrote, well, great 'airport' novels. They were often about this strange, to me, sect called Catholics (or worse.)
As a sociologist (Ph.D, U/Chicago) he knew the data & used it most provocatively. He was wrong a few times. But he was mostly right. And never, ever shy.
When it counted the most, he stood up & said:
In the worst-case scenario, the Catholic Church in the United States....may go down the drain, but not because of attacking infidels, not because of celibacy or homosexuality or sexual abuse, not because of secularism and materialism, but because of incompetence, stupidity, and clerical culture — all enemies from within.
As his family most appropriately said:
He resides now with the Lord of the Dance, and that dance will go on.
