I got a hankering for a bit of old school music today (started with listening to the B-52s and Lipps Inc. yesterday), and I ran across an old undergraduate memory.
It was 1985, and I was partying with a bunch of people I used to swim with while an undergrad---good mixture of students, some folks in their mid-20s, and a pretty even split between men/women. Not too much sexual tension, just good-timing friends enjoying themselves together. We ended up at a guy's house after hitting the bars for a few hours, drank most of his beers and the stuff we had brought, and we were just at that magic point in a party where either it peters out or catches fire.
Doug, the guy who owned the house, throws on the Commodores 1977 self-titled album and goes straight to "Brick House."
I don't know what it was about that exact song at that exact time, but it was f#cking electric!
That bass hit everyone in their gut, and the place was Instantaneous Dance Madness. Everyone rocked out, bent their bodies, pounded the floor ... it was absolute party crank.
The party went on until sunrise, spilled out into the back yard and down the street ... The only way the entire night made any sense was a week later when everyone sat together sober and tried to collect the memory shards into a cohesive narrative. It was fantastic.
Anyway, it got me to thinking that probably everyone has a couple of songs they remember that put a fire into a party and made the day/evening/morning utterly memorable. How about some fun tonight with some video links and shared memories?
