to add to the news that Susan Rice is moving over to National Security Advisor, a position which does NOT require Senate approval, Politico just emailed out the following:
President Barack Obama will on Wednesday nominate Samantha Power as his new ambassador to the United Nations, administration officials tell POLITICO. Power would replace Susan Rice, his new pick for national security adviser.
Power, an Irish-born author on human rights and genocide, served as an aide at the National Security Council as the senior director for multilateral affairs and was named chair of the Atrocities Prevention Board that Obama created last year.
The UN position, which is of ambassadorial rank, does require Senate approval, and this could get very interesting.
I applaud the President being willing to nominate her.
Let's see if he can get her confirmed.
5:46 AM PT: The news about Power is now appearing elsewhere, such as in this Washington Post story, which notes
White House officials said Obama will nominate Samantha Power to replace Rice at the United Nations. Power, who won a Pulitzer Prize for her book “A Problem from Hell” on the U.S. response to genocide, served as a senior director for multilateral affairs and human rights on the National Security Council during Obama’s first term.
