Otis Ferg can think in machine language. That's two digits, pure 1s and 0s, to you and me here early in the 21st century. Even more in the future. "Even," though, should not be confused with "Evan." Evan is Otis's friend. And they are stuck in the past.
But when in the past?
Please perambulate below the orange anti-antimacassar for your chance to express your opinion.
As those of you that have been reading Sherlock Holmes in Space know, Sherlock Holmes and Dr John Watson are transported into space and into the future aboard the SS Oligarch, at the behest of the Knower, Edgar and a few other high-ranking crew members. The invitation is delivered by Edgar's time-line-puritan friend Cody. When Cody's time runs out, Edgar decides his time is over too. Edgar appoints Evan, a previously low-ranking tape wrangler in systems, to be the new Knower. Evan brings his former boss, Otis, along with him to the SS Oligarch's Hell to say farewell to Cody and Edgar. Holmes and Watson go with them. While there, Holmes and Otis discover the dangerous power contained within the mysterious ship's mysterious black box computer. The four, Otis, Evan, Holmes and Watson, exit Hell by climbing what eventually turns into the stairs at 221-B Baker Street, London. Rye Ergot Fungus may have been involved.
One or more factions aboard the vessel has taken advantage of the transition of the Knower's position by framing Otis and Evan, the new Knower, for the murder of Cody and Edgar, the late Knower. Jerome, Evan's friend from systems, and Control, the woman that runs the Smiley Grill in the basement of The Sir Alec Guinness aboard the SS Oligarch, have come back in time to warn Otis and Evan of the situation.
Holmes tells Jerome and Control that, unless the ship reverses course or, worse, attempts to rendezvous with one or more of the other vessels, then the secret of the black box's leaky black hole filling is probably best kept a secret. Only the patrons of the Smiley Grill, which is actually systems, and select docents at the Parade of Homes, which also serves as the local gateway to Hell, need be let in on the secret. The secret being that it is apparently far easier to capture a black hole than it is keeping it captive.
The SS Oligarch has been set-up as a place where interesting things will happen (one hopes). But that is for a later story, perhaps.
For now, Otis and Evan are stuck on Earth. That's a given. And they can't continue to hole-up at 221-B Baker Street. That's another given. And they will be going to the U.S. because that's where Holmes said they should go. As for Holmes and Watson, they need to get back to work in London. The famous pair have had their fill of time travel for a while. So Otis and Evan need to be on their own. But what era? This is where you come in.
I can visualize Otis and Evan remaining in the early 20th century. Going to the U.S. they will bear witness to the closing of the frontier. They will watch as skyscrapers start to become commonplace. They might even help President Roosevelt. But remember, the first President Roosevelt was a Republican; dkos is a site for Democrats. Nuance and labels don't always mix well on a partisan site. And I'm not sure I want to have to devote every third or fourth paragraph explaining the difference between a Theodore Roosevelt R and the R's of today (although a disclaimer before each installment might suffice).
Another possibility is to transport Otis and Evan to a time closer to our own. Partially broken time travel has certainly worked very well for the writers of "Doctor Who" (if not always for The Doctor himself). Two characters from the future being placed in or near our own time has several advantages that I as the writer also find appealing.
But what do you as readers want? Here's your chance to help shape the direction of what will be happening (hopefully) in this spot Tuesday nights at 8 P.M.
