I can't believe that no one has diaried this here (or if they did I missed it). I came across it on Yahoo News:
Alaska Republican Sen. Lisa Murkowski said on Wednesday that she now supports allowing same-sex couples to legally marry, becoming the third U.S. senator in her party to change positions on the issue.
"Countless Alaskans and Americans want to give themselves to one another and create a home together. I support marriage equality and support the government getting out of the way to let that happen," Murkowski said in a statement on Wednesday after announcing her new position during a radio interview with NBC's affiliate station in Alaska.
I am sure that this is because she can see what we all know, that the Republican bigotry on women, Blacks, workers, Hispanics, homosexuals is a sinking ship that is going nowhere. The age demographics sure tell the story.
Who could have ever imagined this statement coming from a Republican in 2013?
The Supreme Court is set to make a pair of decisions on the topic of marriage equality shortly, and the national conversation on this issue is picking back up. This is a significant moment for our nation when it comes to rethinking our society’s priorities and the role of government in Americans’ private lives and decisions, so I want to be absolutely clear with Alaskans. I am a life-long Republican because I believe in promoting freedom and limiting the reach of government. When government does act, I believe it should encourage family values. I support the right of all Americans to marry the person they love and choose because I believe doing so promotes both values: it keeps politicians out of the most private and personal aspects of peoples’ lives – while also encouraging more families to form and more adults to make a lifetime commitment to one another.
Does she know that the SCOTUS will deal a blow to DOMA and Prop H8 and she is trying to get ahead of the curve?
Whatever her reasons, we welcome Senator Murkowski to the righteous side on this debate. Time to work on Joe Manchin, Mark Pryor, and Mary Landrieu (the only 3 Dems that still oppose marriage equality).
I figured she would be excoriated, but I haven't seen any of that yet. As a matter of fact, the Yahoo comments surprised me in a pleasant manner (anyone that ever reads them knows that the Yahoo News comments tend to make teabaggers look kind). Here are a few of them:
Don't like gay marriage? Don't marry a gay.
For the life of me, I can't understand why anybody would care if two complete strangers can get married or not. How about we all mind our own business and let people live their lives the way they want to. If 2 people who you've never even met have a wedding, that doesn't impact your life at all. So why stick your nose in their business?
Gay marriage infringes on your religious rights in the same way that girls going to school infringes on the religious rights of the Taliban.
What part of equal rights and protections under the laws is hard for Republicans to understand? Where I applaud this woman for finally pulling her head out it's friken about time. This is a very simple issue. We either have equal rights for all of our citizens or we don't.
And those are but a few of the highly recommended comments.
