I have a sneaking suspicion.
And it is this:
The real significance of this SCOTUS term has been the consistent grinding away at the American Dream - your right to class action, the dismantling of voting rights, employee rights, I'll even go back to Citizens United.
The Corporatists in charge couldn't give a rats ass about whether you are gay, who you love, or even abortion. They want power and money and want to hold you down to achieve it.
Bans on gay marriage are only important if they represent a means to oppress or control a portion of the population. I'll argue that they don't need it anymore because they have many other, more effective means to control more people.
More in extended...
They don't need gay marriage on the ballot to drive turnout if they can fuck with voting rights.
They don't need to make arbitrary decisions about partner benefits if, hell, now everyone can be made the victim of arbitrariness.
They don't need to use repression of Teh Gay as a tool to demonstrate their power when the NSA apparently has us all, for lack of a better term, by the balls.
My suggestion is not so much that we won but they abdicated. Some was due to society coming to its senses, but most people born after 1980 or so aren't too concerned about whether someone is gay.
My general sense is that nothing happens without the tacit approval of the powers-that-be- and they decided they didn't need to kick Gay around anymore- they have bigger fish to fry.
Its a victory, but I think the pattern of SCOTUS rulings this team demonstrates what it really means.
And yes, I'm not in a good mood today.
