As I'm sure you all know (....), July 4 is one of the 3 US national holidays that is not tied to a particular day of the calendar week. (Bonus loser points if you can name the other 2 w/o looking them up.) Since July 4 fell on a Thursday this year, this brings up the question for many workers of what to do on July 5, regarding work. Unlike Black Friday the day after Thanksgiving, which has evolved into a de facto national holiday (mainly for purposes of shopping, of course), when there is a Friday, July 5, there isn't really a set national 'standard practice' of how to treat that day, when it comes to working or not. No idea what any of you guys/gals did, which is the reason for the poll here. Speaking for self....
.....the original plan was to try to work from home, which my colleagues who were thinking of working at all were going to do also. No meetings, after all, so no reason to be physically on-site. However, my work laptop has been having issues lately, so I wasn't sure if I could log into work from home.
Bottom line: I couldn't. So I ended up coming into work after all to work a half-day. Even though that seems pretty loser, it actually turned out OK, since it was pretty quiet at work, much fewer distractions than usual. I managed to complete some requests and e-mails that could be done fairly fast, which included some from overseas (where, of course, they don't take July 4 off). Of course, there will still be loads of stuff to do on Monday, but at least there's a tiny bit less.
Granted, like Black Friday, a good many businesses try to have Independence Day weekend sales, although these obviously don't have nearly the traction, or tradition (or whatever) of the former. For the record (not that you care), I didn't shop yesterday, unless one counts going to happy hour in that aspect, i.e. of spending money on a holiday weekend. BTW, that happy hour was the self-imposed deadline for me yesterday, since it started at 4 PM, even though obviously self didn't have to be there at 4 PM exactly.
So now that your holiday weekend is winding down, you can vote (or not) in the poll, and also observe the usual SNLC protocol, namely your loser stories of the week. Hopefully these don't involve inappropriate instances of firecrackers, fireworks or other loud objects going off at the wrong time or in the wrong place....
