Allow me to restate Mr. Douthat's arguments:
1) According to anti-abortion groups, the laws effects are overstated.
2) The laws probably won't stand up to court challenge.
3) Even if they do, Texas won't treat women worse than they already do.
4) The proper comparison is between the USA and other countries. The American experience of back-alley abortions prior to Roe v. Wade is entirely irrelevant.
5) Countries that ban abortions suck, and are inevitably 3rd world pestholes. Therefore, we shall assume that the goal is the restriction of abortion and not the outright banning of abortion.
6) Europe has restrictions and lower abortion rates; therefore, abortion restrictions cause women to decide not to have abortions. Availability of effective sexual-education classes is not a factor.
7) Ireland's abortion restrictions lead to healthier babies. Availability of "Socialist" healthcare is not a factor.
8) If an Irish woman wants an abortion, they can quickly and easily flee the country.
9) Maybe, perhaps, possibly, Texas should have insisted on better healthcare for women in conjunction with destroying the existing system.
10) But probably not.
11) Democrats are making a mistake in protesting abortion restrictions, instead of insisting on both better healthcare and no abortion restrictions. Republicans should stay the course on opposing better healthcare as well as banning abortions.
12) All Democrats are baby-killers.
