Casa Brillig took a long-planned vacation to the Pacific Northwest earlier this month. As I'm not ready to present the full Vacation Diary in all its photogenic glory - ~2000 pictures to sort through plus school starting today killed that plan - I was instead going to talk about an interesting observation I made about home versus Portland & Seattle. Alas, that was thwarted by the actual topic tonight (but don't worry, I'll get to it). Follow me below the dingledoodle squigglie dKosagnocchi dividerthingie fold after a word from our sponsor...
Here at Top Comments we strive to nourish community by rounding up some of the site's best, funniest, most mojo'd & most informative commentary, and we depend on your help!! If you see a comment by another Kossack that deserves wider recognition, please send it either to topcomments at gmail or to the Top Comments group mailbox by 9:30pm Eastern. Please please please include a few words about why you sent it in as well as your user name (even if you think we know it already :-)), so we can credit you with the find!
While on vacation, I got email from K2's incoming 3rd grade teacher. It had all sorts of useful information, including the expected School Supply List. From colored pencils & dry erase markers (4-pack please) to $3 for a planner book so that all kids had the same one, pink pencil erasers (yay we had leftovers from last year!) to an 8x5 pencil box, I had all the info I needed two weeks before class started. We took it to the store last Friday, got everything, and had the luxury of being done early with enough time to return things if we saw a better price or value.
Then there's K1's sophomore year experience. While her schedule was available via the electronic portal students, parents and staff have available to share information, she didn't receive any information until she was actually in each class. Which size binder/notebook, how many folders, etc etc. Half of those teachers are taking points off if the stuff isn't brought to class tomorrow.
Problem is, she only had HALF her classes today; the remainder meet for the first time tomorrow. Meaning TWO trips to the store to get everything. Being a smart kid, she took the initiative, went to the remaining teachers, and told them with a straight face her parents were unavailable to drive her tomorrow so she needed to shop tonite. Could they please tell her what they required in advance, so as to get them tonight when her horribly overscheduled parents could take her :). Yeah, she's good.
Here's my issue: we have a spiffy electronic means of communication, so why couldn't they give us the @#$% info before school starts so those of us with elementary and older kids don't have to make at LEAST two trips to the store to get this stuff? Making Yours Truly have nearly no evening in which to craft the TC she intended to write? Inquiring minds want to know. Yeah, it's going to be an LTE.
In the meantime, discuss your experiences or memories of first days of school from the perspective of student, parent, or staff. 179 teaching days until summer vacation!
Brillig's ObDisclaimer: The decision to publish each nomination lies with the evening's Diarist and/or Comment Formatter. My evenings at the helm, I try reeeeallllyy hard to publish everything
without regard to content. I really do, even when I disagree personally with any given nomination. "TopCommentness" lies in the eyes of the nominator and of you, the reader - I leave the decision to you. I do
not publish self-nominations (ie your own comments) and if I ruled the world, we'd all build community, supporting and uplifting instead of tearing our fellow Kossacks down.
From VL Baker:
Getting some great comments lately in the Meatless Monday series; here's one by JayDean.
From Puddytat:
Nobody should miss this Top Comment by cskendrick in MinistryofTruth's diary. 1 line that says it all about where the GOP is taking us.
From Nattiq:
Nominated this one by Lepanto mainly for this line: Who would ever have thought back in 2008 that the climax of the Obama presidency would be a replay of Iraq with Kerry playing the part of Colin Powell?
From Yours Truly, brillig:
As usual, you must go read Hunter's latest diary. Then you'll understand why the thread begun by Senor Unoball, and comments by stabilizer and Bob Johnson made me laugh so hard.
Steveningen's diary told us that once again, Pat Robertson said stupid shit. xxdr zombiexx speaketh truth in this top comment.
