Here in the 2nd Congressional District of Michigan all of us progressive liberals are neatly gerrymandered into a reliably 10+ Republican district. I'm sure many of you also find yourself in the same situation. We have no representation, our congressmen do not care what we think, they do not fear our votes.
My congressman, Bill Huizenga, is not a bloviating, right-wing radical who makes his living on Fox News hating our President. My Congressman is much worse than that, he's almost anonymous. When Pete Hoekstra retired from congress, Mr. Huizenga won the lottery which was the Republican primary to succeed Mr. Hoekstra.
Everything I have read about Mr. Huizenga shows that he is a decent family man who loves his country, certainly a much better representative than the corrupt, powerful, republican insider Pete Hoekstra. But wait...maybe not.
Bull Huizenga epitomizes what is wrong with the American political system. Most of Mr. Huizenga's campaign contributions come from the same place most of the other Republican's get theirs...leadership PAC's, businesses and nefarious, anonymous super pac's (read as Koch Brothers) and in exchange for the great opportunity to be a U.S. Congressman he does exactly what he is told to do, he toes the Republican line 100% of the time.
There was a time in this country when a Man or Woman would strive to become a part of the government so that they could do something important, they had an idea or they had something important to say, not Mr. Huizenga, he stands for nothing, he has nothing important to say, he is nothing more than a pawn.
I do not believe that Mr. Huizenga of his own volition would shut down the government to stop healthcare for people who need it, or cut medicare or food stamps. He would never go out of his way to throw children off of Schip or Women off WIC, would not suppress the right of citizen's to exercise the vote.
But just like maybe a hundred congressmen just like him, he has lost his humanity, he has sacrificed it to the Tea Party. He has a great job, with great perks and if he even one time tried to stand up for what he believed in he would lose his job in the twinkling of an eye.
That is why he is worse than the wild eyed, crazy tea partiers because as the over-used quote from Edmund Burke reads
The Only Thing Necessary for the Triumph of Evil is that Good Men Do Nothing
