Last night, Jon Stewart properly blasted the GOP for playing the blame game on the government shutdown.
Except for this one thing that's kinda getting under my skin a little bit concerning said shutdown. There's this whole Republican lack of what I like to call ownership over our current predicament.
SEN. TED CRUZ, R-TX (10/2/2013): This is Harry Reid's shutdown.
REP. JIM BRIDENSTINE, R-OK (10/4/2013): This is not the Republican shutdown.
REP. RENEE ELLMERS, R-NC (10/4/2013): This is Harry Reid and Barack Obama's shutdown.
SEN. MIKE LEE, R-UT (10/5/2013): Democrats refuse to work with us.
REP. MARLIN STUTZMAN, R-IN (10/8/2013): Harry Reid refuses to come to the table and talk.
REP. VIRGINIA FOXX, R-NC (10/8/2013): Democrats still refuse to budge.
REP. CHRIS STEWART, R-UT (10/4/2013): No willingness at all to compromise.
REP. TOM RICE, R-SC (10/8/2013): The President won't negotiate.
Yeah, it's not their shutdown. Is their name on the shutdown? It's not! Check the name on the shutdown! It's not...! They didn't do it! They blame O.J. O.J. did it! If the glove doesn't fit, you must... remember the chase with the car? (audience laughter)
Any, the party of personal responsibility ain't takin' none! So listen. Here's the proof once and for all. Sniffles McGillicuddy here, John Boehner, sat down with George Stephanopoulos, who asked him about a claim Harry Reid has been making.
10/6/2013:
GEORGE STEPHANOPOULOS: He says, and he said it publicly on many occasions, that you came to him back in July and offered to pass a clean government funding resolution — no Obamacare amendments — it was $70 billion dollars below what the Senate wanted, they accepted it, and now you've reneged on that offer.
SPEAKER JOHN BOEHNER: No, clearly there was a conversation about doing this.
GEORGE STEPHANOUPOULOS: Several conversations.
SPEAKER JOHN BOEHNER: Several.
GEORGE STEPHANOUPOULOS: And you offered a clean resolution.
SPEAKER JOHN BOEHNER: But I and my members decided that the threat of Obamacare and what was happening was so important, that it was time for us to take a stand. We took a stand.
Did you fucking hear that?? (audience laughter) Can we stop having a conversation about both sides are going to blink? Oooh.... THEY HAD A DEAL!! But... OBAMACARE!!
"We decided to take a stand." Look, you think Obamacare's a big enough threat to this country that you need to shut down the government over it? Fine. Own it. Don't fart and point at the dog! (wild audience cheering and applause)
(to picture of dog) Did you do that? Who's a good boy? I can't stay mad at you!
Video below the fold.
Jon then looked at the
UN efforts to rid Syria of their chemical weapons with
Jessica Williams, who noted the Syrian government during a civil war is
still less dysfunctional than the U.S. government right now.
Jason Jones then talked with a GOP strategist about the shutdown like a
hostage negotiation, because it's basically what it's become.
Meanwhile, Stephen also looked at the upcoming
debt ceiling deadline.
He then looked at the latest in
marijuana laws and how
Thanksgiving falls on the first day of Hanukkah this year.
Stephen talked with actor
Paul Giamatti, and Jon talked with Pakistani Nobel Peace Prize nominee
Malala Yousafzai, which of course went long. Here's the unedited interview in three parts.
