The Storyline
Laura and her half-sister Marian both live at the home of Laura's uncle Mr. Fairlie. Walter is hired by Mr. Fairlie to give art lessons to Laura at the estate. On his way traveling to the home, he briefly meets a young woman dressed in white and points the way to London to her. After arriving at the house, he notices how similar the woman in white looks like Laura.
When he begins to fall in love with Laura, Walter decides to leave the job and move on with his life. Laura meanwhile gets married and finds she is disappointed with her husband. Marian moves back in with Laura after her marriage. They also meet the woman in white, and Marian has also kept in touch with Walter off and on.
Laura's husband Percival schemes to get ahold of her fortune for himself. This includes tricking the sisters into splitting up. But Marian and Walter are determined to expose Percival for what he is and to protect Laura at all costs. And through written narrative testimonials from the different characters of the story, the entire mystery unfolds.
