This is just a quick note on my Healthcare.gov experience today. I have insurance through my employer right now, so I was in no great hurry to hit the website when it first opened. I'm a contract engineer though, so my employer does not contribute to the cost of my insurance and it is very expensive. I thought I'd take a look at the ACA marketplace and see what my choices are.
The first surprise was that everything I looked at worked perfectly. I did not create an account or sign up (yet), but I was able to look at options and prices with no trouble at all. The website options were clear and straightforward. It looks like I am probably making too much right now to qualify for any subsidy to insure my family, so that will simplify the process for me. But as a contractor, it's great to know that these options for insurance will still be available when this job ends. I also get a lot more options to chose from. And it looks like I can save two or three hundred dollars a month for an equivalent plan by buying through the marketplace instead of buying through my employer. Obamacare looks like a big win all the way around! Woohoo!
