This October the GOP is telling the American public a scary story just in time for Halloween. It is a story that is nightmarish, designed to scare the American People in the way that the radio broadcast of War of the Worlds did many years ago. And the title of the story is--
Obamacare.
And the story itself is very scary. Death panels. Government bureaucrats controlling your healthcare. Insurers canceling good policies and people being forced onto policies that cost many times the amount of their canceled policies.
But the GOP Obamacare story is complete fiction. And it is a complete fiction designed to so terrorize the American public that they vote for the GOP in the next election.
But unlike the GOP fictional scary story, there is a real scary story this Halloween. And that scary story is that we have in this country people who do not have health insurance. And as a result of lacking access to affordable health care, there are some people who find that they are living in a real life horror story. And so I am going to tell you their story.
They have no health insurance. This may be because either they were turned down in the individual market due to pre-existing conditions, or they could not afford the premiums. And then one day they woke up with a problem that is bothering them. And since they don't have the wealth of Mitt Romney or Donald Trump, they put off going to the doctor, hoping that they will get better. But they don't. They get worse and worse. And finally things get so bad that they decide to go to the Emergency Room. Only they find out that it is too late. They have end stage cancer (which could have been treated if caught earlier) and they don't have long to live. Or they have out of control diabetes and are going to have to lose a limb. And so the damage inflicted on them by the lack of health insurance rivals the damage inflicted on the victims in the fictional horror stories so often told on Halloween.
Fortunately, this real life horror story is about to end. Because next Halloween, these same people will have access to affordable health care through the Affordable Care Act. And next year, after experiencing the benefits of Obamacare, the American People won't be interested in listening to the GOP's scary Obamacare story.
