Received this e-mail from Rick Weiland's (D. SD) U.S. Senate campaign and his "Responsible Government Pledge" has picked up some major support:
South Dakota Senate candidate Rick Weiland's national petition drive asking candidates for and Members of Congress to never again vote to shut down our government because of disagreements on unrelated issues won support from MoveOn.org last evening.
"It is critically important that we act now, while the breathtaking irresponsibility of shutting down our democracy over disagreements on unrelated issues is on full display, so that this will never happen again," Weiland said. "The support of MoveOn in building public pressure to force politicians to promise they will never again vote to close down our government is a big step forward. MoveOn recognizes that its supporters, like the overwhelming majority of Americans, vehemently oppose closing democracy’s doors just because we cannot agree on some unrelated issue," he added.
Here is the exact copy of the petition: We, the undersigned, respectfully request that members of Congress and candidates for Congress take and respect the following Responsible Government Pledge: "I hereby pledge that, if elected to represent you, I will never vote to shut down your government, or to place your government in default, in order to force it to act, or to prevent it from acting, on unrelated issues."
MoveOn.org has seven million members nationwide and will encourage their support for the petition drive launched by Weiland seeking to get Americans to pressure their lawmakers into opposing future government shutdowns.
