I knit a hat for my friend K. She recently had head surgery, wherein they shaved the middle third of her head (ear to ear). Some of her hair has growing back. I want to keep her head warm.
Yarn: Malabrio Rios: Ravelry Red : The twist is a bit tighter than shown in the photo. This is a superwash worsted, the same yarn I used in the ill-fated and still-unsewn baby sweater. My friend K. asked for the same yarn! ;-)
Pattern: Late Snow with a six-stitch (each side) mirrored cable (every six rows), one purl stitch in between, 2 purl stitches into between the columns.
Cables:
Cables at the top, details:
I fiddled with the decrease rows just a bit. The pattern called for a 3-stitch cable/twist, which I did not want to do - I thought it might look unlike the previous cables. So I did the cables one row early, w/ 4 stitches. It seems to have worked.
I am about a year and a half from my first finished hats, and have a degree of confidence that I can knit a hat to fit about any head, given the right measurement and the right pattern. I look forward to feeling this confident about lace, and socks, and perhaps even lacey socks. ;-)
I have issues concentrating these days, so I have not been knitting lace nor socks. I am making a scarf for a friend.
Yarns:
Homespun, by Lion, a slightly bumpy heavy worsted/bulky acrylic, in Nouveau.
Bernat Satin, a smooth DK in Mocha.
Pattern: This is the trial & error part. This is being knit to match a hoodless coat, lest my friend's head get toooooo cold in her semi-mild climate. The two yarns together were quite heavy, and I didn't like the texture. The Homespun alone is visually light. The dark brown from the DK yarn helps. So, I knit about 20 rows of the yarns held together at the end, and I am knitting in a pattern of: 4 rows Homespun, 4 rows Satin, 4 rows Homespun, 4 rows yarns together. This maintains the width with a slightly wavy edge. I will probably knit a good section of the yarns together around the center of the scarf, and add some clear snaps at the center section for a convertible hood.
I do not seem to have any photos of this scarf available at this time.
There is an exciting quilt block contest that may go into space. Our country is blessed with an astronaut with hand-sewing/quilting skills and interests! Here are the details, and the link to the contest (which is a .pdf). I love that NASA gave this woman a platform for her non-scientific interests. This is not the Apollo missions!
