Welcome to Thursday Coffee Hour. This is an open topic thread so help yourself to the goodies and sit a spell and let us know what is new with you. I thought today we could talk about the mythological bird the phoenix.
I first heard of the mythological bird the Phoenix when I was a small child in New Mexico. It was called the thunderbird there and was on the license plates of the cars.
The phoenix legend appears in Persian, Greek, Roman, Egyptian, Chinese, and Phoenician mythology. It has been portrayed as a stork like bird and more commonly as an eagle. Its life cycle has been said to be between 500 and 1,000 years. At the end of its cycle it builds a cinnamon twig nest and goes out in flames. A new phoenix arises from the ashes.
In Chinese mythology the phoenix is second only to the dragon in importance. The dragon and phoenix intertwined is frequently seen at marriage ceremonies.
I used the phoenix legend as part of the basis of my short story Phoenix Rising in my fantasy short story collection. I have also used the phoenix in some of my artwork.
So what are your thought on the phoenix and mythology? And of course what’s for dinner?
