Last Tuesday I tried to get a seat on the local school board in my town. I got 4,781 votes and missed a seat by about 40 votes (which would have avoided a recount or a run-off). The BOE seat is a town-wide seat so I tried to travel through all 10 districts in my town and successfully met people in 4 different ones. I knocked on a lot of doors made phone calls and pandered for votes outside the local high school for 5 hours on election day (one of 10 polling places). Several voters expressed frustration and confusion about the switches to their districts and polling places. The local registrars didn't feel it necessary to direct-mail new polling places to our voters, so I witnessed voter suppression first-hand. One man I met on election day asked what party I was from and when I told him Democrat he told me "Democrats are losers". I also met a woman who lived in town with a green card for thirty years who finally became a citizen so she could vote who only wanted to know which candidates supported same sex marriage because she didn't agree with it. It was quite an experience and I've been encouraged to try again. I'm still trying to decide. What was it like for you?
