Received this e-mail today from Senator Tom Udall (D. NM) regarding domestic surveillance:
When Congress passed the Patriot Act over a decade ago, I voted against it because I believed it was too hastily constructed -- that it put too much power in the hands of the federal government and did not provide proper measures to safeguard Americans’ constitutional right to privacy.
Unfortunately, we now know those concerns were justified.
Over the last twelve years, government surveillance of American citizens has expanded dramatically. Secret courts authorized by the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) have given the NSA and other governmental agencies far too much power.
That’s why I’m working with my colleagues in the Senate to reform the FISA courts and protect your privacy. And I’d like you to join me, too.
Sign our petition calling for immediate FISA reform.

Protecting our national security interests and upholding our citizens’ civil liberties are not either/or propositions. We must safeguard our country from national security threats without sacrificing our Constitutional rights to privacy and freedom of speech.
And these secret FISA courts that issue secret court orders based on secret interpretations of the law are not the way to go.
Your privacy and your right to freedom of speech matter. And we cannot let FISA courts jeopardize them. Sign the petition calling for FISA reform today.

Thank you for your commitment to this important issue and for all you do for our campaign.
Sincerely,
Tom
