Received this e-mail from Alison Lundergan Grimes' (D. KY) U.S. Senate campaign regarding Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R. KY) and the debt ceiling:
Last fall Mitch McConnell’s selfish political agenda caused a government shutdown that cost our economy $24 billion.
Most people would stop after digging a hole like that. But not Senator Gridlock. My opponent just recently announced that he isn’t going to allow the government to pay its bills going forward unless he is able to start implementing his rigid ideological agenda – one that includes drastic cuts to Medicare and Social Security.
He is threatening to do serious damage to the US economy to score political points with the Tea Party.
The fact that this type of behavior has become typical of how my opponent operates in the Senate doesn’t make it any less irresponsible. If we default on our obligations, we’ll usher in a new financial crisis that will cost countless jobs and effectively level a tax hike on every single American.
Tell Congress: don’t play politics with the full faith and credit of the United States. Our government must pay its bills.

This shouldn’t be a partisan issue. Even President Ronald Reagan acknowledged that this kind of “brinksmanship threatens the holders of government bonds and those who rely on Social Security and veterans benefits. Interest rates would skyrocket, instability would occur in financial markets, and the federal deficit would soar.”
I’m working with my friend Senator Mark Warner to send a message. There is no justification for this type of blackmail and political hostage-taking.
Please join Senator Mark Warner and me in sending a message to Washington: stop playing politics with America’s credit!
