Malala Yousafzai, had an operation on Saturday to replace the area of her skull lost during the failed assassination attempt by the Taliban aimed at preventing her work to advance girls' education in Pakistan. A cochlear implant was also installed to restore the hearing on her left side, in addition to the titanium plate replacing the lost bone.
Monday the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham, England held a press conference to announce the success of what they hope will be the last operation she has to undergo. After a brief precautionary period in the intensive care section, she is recovering "very well" on an ordinary ward. She will continue to be treated as an out-patient.
Also released Monday was a video taken before the operation in which she recommits to working for girl's eduction (same link)
"Today you can see that I'm alive. I can speak, I can see you, I can see everyone and today I can speak and I'm getting better day by day.
"It's just because of the prayers of people, because all the people - men, women, children - all of them have prayed for me.
"Because of these prayers, God has given me this new life and this is a second life.
"I want to serve the people and I want every girl, every child, to be educated and for that reason we have organised the Malala Fund."
The Malala Fund is being run by Washington DC based charity Vital Voices.
Before she was attacked, Malala was in the process of setting up an organization with her friends to get girls into school and out of domestic labor. The first grant of the Malala Fund will continue this process and provide a safe space for the girls, resources for a positive learning environment and an incentive program for families. After a needs assessment and final program design, the project will be launched and running by spring 2013
