What's your oldest piece of clothing?
or
What item do you wish you'd kept?
I'm not attached to old clothes. The basic rule of cleaning out the closet is simple: If I haven't worn it in a year, out it goes to benefit someone else.
But this past weekend we visited a friend of pNut's in Santa Cruz, a woman who owns the vintage Cognito clothing store on the Pacific Garden Mall, and as I looked through the 70's rack and giggled over the polyester paisleys and the ubiquitous orange and yellow daisy-strewn mini-dresses I wished I had saved some clothes from the period. I thought fondly of the long-gone peasant blouses and hand-embroidered jeans I lived in.
Then I realized I have saved one now-vintage item for reasons that remain a mystery. From the way-back of the closet I pulled out my full-length heavy Made in Argentina suede coat that I've rarely worn but have carted from closet to closet over the decades. It was wildly impractical for southern California when I bought it in 1974 with one of my first paychecks, but it was the first coat I owned that wasn't second-hand. The thick suede isn't particularly soft and with its nearly 10 pounds of dead cowhide it's remarkably heavy to lug around. It is useless in rain, not particularly warm, soaks up stains and grease and is costly to clean, but I cannot let it go and I don't know why.
So how about you? What is your oldest piece of clothing you just can't donate or throw away? Is it the old letter jacket, the wedding dress, the ratty t-shirt from your first concert, the pair of jeans that will fall apart if you wash them one more time? Did you get rid of something you now wish you had kept?
The dead-cow coat makes a rare appearance at a UC Davis anti-nuclear protest, circa 1981

Sunday, March 17th
SFKossacks Welcome realalaskan with Birding in Point Reyes
TIME: 9:00 AM
LOCATION: Point Reyes National Seashore
1 Bear Valley Road • Point Reyes Station for general location purposes. See details listed below:
Meet at Bear Valley Visitor center parking lot at 9:00 AM by the Earthquake Trail. This is the larger lot across the road from the center itself, and the trailhead is by the very luxurious bathrooms. We'll walk the Earthquake trail, then head out the Point to the north. (Shuttle service rules makes lighthouse/Chimney Rock too much of a hassle.) I think picnic-type lunch is easiest logistically, but lineatus is open to suggestions (especially if the weather isn't as warm as it's been all winter...)
After that, Five Brooks Pond for a nice walk, then down to Bolinas Lagoon, including a walk around Pine Gulch and optional side trip to Keith Hansen's studio. We will finish around 4 (maybe a little later if we go to Keith's).
With this itinerary, it will be fairly easy to accommodate those who only have time for a half-day - morning or afternoon. If you wanted to do a half day, arriving in mid-day, kosmail me with your cell # and ETA and I can let you know where we'll be at that point.
For those of you going via Pt. Reyes Station in the morning, I highly recommend coffee and pastries from Toby's Feed Barn in PRS, next to the post office. omgamazing!

Community Quilt Project NN13 Flash Mob Photo
smileycreek is organizing and asking all Community Quilt recipients to bring their quilts to NN13. We'll assemble at a pre-designated location and time for a group photo with one of the NN13 professional photographers. It will be a group hug celebrating one of the most beloved community building projects we have here at Daily Kos with Sara R and winglion at the center of it. navajo and Glen the Plumber are going to scout out and select a location in advance for all to meet with their quilts for a memorable photo opportunity. Stay tuned.
