The ACLU of MN (http://www.aclu-mn.org/) has filed a lawsuit against a small town for the unlawful arrest and interrogation of a Latino woman by the local police and sheriff agencies. The woman was the passenger in a car and the police wanted to question the driver. The passenger got out of the car and attempted to go to work but law enforcement officials wouldn't let her go, despite her showing them her valid MN ID and having dispatch clear it as valid with no warrants. Lacking any suspicion of a crime, the officers brought her to the police station where they questioned her on her "real name." She insisted that she had given them her real name. They demanded that she show them her other papers and took her to her home where one officer went into her bedroom to look at her passport, birth certificate and greencard as well as some documents belonging to her US born son. Only after they "verified" her identity did they let her go.

The small town has quite a racial problem and the officer who went into her home was later heard comparing minorities to "monkeys" on his audio recorder. The city claims that the officers did nothing wrong, that the officer's comments were inappropriate but weren't said in front of anyone except other law enforcement officers and he's sorry.
A different officer was the basis of a Star Tribune article for his traffic stops that targeted a high number of minorities. http://www.startribune.com/...
The ACLU of MN is working hard on racism and discrimination issues. Last year, they were heavily involved in the Vote NO campaign to prevent a ban on gay marriage and a voter ID law that would have hurt minorities voting abilities. They are a small organization and could use your support for projects like they have been doing. Please consider giving a small donation.
