I give up on my opposition to the "Draft Schweitzer" movement that is being organized by DailyKos and other progressive organizations.
While Schweitzer is progressive on some issues, such as health care and campaign finance reform, Schweitzer is only slightly to the left of outgoing Senator Max Baucus on guns, as he supports expanding background checks but, while Schweitzer was Governor of Montana, he signed into law legislation that nullified some federal gun laws in Montana in 2009.
There are two reasons why I will endorse Schweitzer if he runs for the open U.S. Senate seat in Montana:
1) Quite literally no other Democrat in Montana seems even remotely interested in running for Baucus's seat. Of course, this may change if Schweitzer declines to run for Baucus's seat, but for now, only Schweitzer seems interested in running for Baucus's seat on the Democratic side of ledger.
2) Schweitzer is a former governor of his home state. Even politically-toxic Republican Mark Sanford was able to win his party's nomination in the special House election in the 1st Congressional District of South Carolina thanks to political connections that Sanford has from his two terms as South Carolina's governor and his previous three terms as a U.S. Representative, and Schweitzer is nowhere near as politically-toxic as Sanford is.
I criticized Schweitzer in a previous diary that I linked to above, and I got laughed at for suggesting running a "true progressive" against Schweitzer in the primary, so I'll endorse Schweitzer if he runs in the 2014 U.S. Senate race in Montana.
