The NRA held a convention this weekend during which they celebrated the filibuster of the Toomey-Manchin bill to extend background checks on gun sales to gun shows. The most interesting thing was how some Republicans tried to defend their vote to uphold the filibuster when polls show 90% support for the idea.
Several senators claimed to support the measure that they voted against. Senator Kelly Ayotte R-NH has been noted for the criticism she has received since the vote. Senator Curz R-TX, on the other hand has been lauded for the same vote. They both used the same talking points to justify the vote. See if you can find the logic:
"I worry that this bill could put us on the path to eventually move to push for a national gun registry which could violate the privacy rights of gun owners."**
** Yes, I am paraphrasing, but I only say that to excuse any minor differences between that and what was actually said. Both senators indicated the potential of this legislation to "put us on the path" of one day pushing for a gun registry. What Bunk! Aside from the fact that creating a national gun registry is already against the law, the only thing the Toomey-Manchin bill does as add a prison term of up to 15 years to any federal worker who breaks it!
It is impossible to propose legislation that could prevent some future congress from proposing creating a national gun registry. The Constitution expressly prohibits the actions of one congress to bind another. However, these senators are expressing a concern that something this bill expressly prohibits will lead to that very thing. This is called lying.
President Obama has increased drone strikes and deportations, yet he is called sot on immigration and terrorism. The only gun law he signed in his first term was to allow concealed weapons in national parks. The NRA said that his refusal to tighten gun control regulations was proof that he wanted to confiscate every gun!
I get criticized for calling gun nuts "Gun nuts." I can live with that.
