The Supreme Court handed the Republicans a short term victory, which some states, like Texas, are already planning on taking advantage of. It's a pretty devastating blow for minorities...in the short term.
If you take a long view, it's easy to tell what it is: Another attempt by the party of racists, misogynists, and theocrats to hold onto power while they are dying out. In a couple of years, the could be left to the history books, if we do what we have to do.
I suspect the next 5-10 years are going to be the roughest this country has seen since the 50s and 60s. Before then, whites controlled the country. That changed in the 60s with blacks refusing to be repressed any more, culminating in the Voting Rights Act.
While this act was weakened significantly by today's decision, we are a different country than we were back then. We have had two generations grow up with blacks having significantly more power than they did before (it's not perfect). This led to the election of our first African American president. This was a major achievement, but it just pointed out to the whites in the Republican party that their control on country was coming to an end. And they have fought it, willing to take down the country rather than share it with minorities.
But they are missing one thing if they think they can go back to the 50s: Us. We have the ability to act to not only fix today's decision, but to end their control over the country. It's not going to be easy, and it will take a few years, but if we do things right, we can make the country better than it has been.
So, what are we going to need to do? The way you change things in this country is to vote. This is why they have worked so hard to gut the VRA. But people can still vote. It will be our job to make people understand that they have to vote, and help them register to vote, and when the time comes, to help them get everything together so they can vote.
We will also need to get candidates in every office from city councils to the president that believe in all Americans, not just white ones or Christian ones, but all Americans. Some of you will need to run for these offices, and the rest of us will support you. When we fill these offices, we can make the changes we want and the country needs.
Finally, we need to be constantly contacting our elected officials to let them know we do not like this decision. We should do this constantly.
The Republicans are going to make it hard on us. We will have to do everything we can to show them that it will not work.
It's up to us.
