Now that we know that the U.S. Government has been secretly been collecting the phone records of U.S. citizens, I think that the U.S. Government should be reminded of the text of the Fourth Amendment. That Amendment reads:
The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.
Reading these words, and considering the actions of the U.S. Government in present day society, makes me conclude that that there is really little or nothing left of the Fourth Amendment. The words "shall not be violated" are strong words, and emphasize the importance that the framers of the Constitution placed on the rights of the American people to be secure from government intrusion.
It would be nice for our leaders in the U.S. Government to go back and read these words and consider what changes need to be made so that we can return to the days when the Fourth Amendment mattered.
Why is it that the only Amendment that seems to matter these days is the Second Amendment?
