I watched two movies about immortality this week. One directed by James Mangold (3:10 to Yuma, Walk The Line) and the other by Neil Jordan (Interview With The Vampire and The Crying Game). One about vampires and the other about mutants. Both very poetic and violent. Both about love, loss, regret and letting go. Both with swords and and extendable claws. Both with a lot of upper body nudity. And both about betrayal, survival and redemption. One set in Japan and one set in Ireland. Both completely transporting.
You can see The Wolverine at probably any theater in the country. It started showing today. I saw the 10pm early show last night. You've probably seen the trailer for this numerous times already, but the trailers don't really capture the spirit of the movie. The international trailer gets pretty close. I can't get the embed to work, but here's the youtube link for it.

You might have a harder time seeing Byzantium in a theater. It was shown this week for one week at my local independent movie theater. But I do believe it is available on demand through IFC.
One note of warning about both of these films. They are filled with brutal violence and they are very deliberately slow paced. But while neither is quite perfect, both are excellent and transcend their genres.
