This week, I saw a facebook post from a rabid, teabaggish group that said Michelle Obama is living like a queen. This was reposted by a dear friend of mine, and my feeling is that you may eff around with Barack all you like, but when you start going after my girl, Michelle Obama, then you crossed a line! So I went into the comments section and did my own little repost, of something I remember feeling very strongly about back in April. It went a little like this:
"Is there anyone among you who, if your child asks for bread, will give a stone?"....... Matthew 7:9.
This video is an example of why I love Michelle Obama, and the policies of her husband, who has struggled to keep education as a national priority. I remember after the sequestration, seeing news stories telling how children were being released from Head Start, and how others were entered into a lottery to determine if they would be allowed to stay in this program. I remember how last year's jobs bill and budget battles always included proposals by the president to keep our country's teachers employed, and how they were always rejected by the opposition. I remember these things and I can't help but think what a wicked and fucked up country we live in... and how skewed our priorities have become.
The first commandment tells us we should value nothing in this world so much as we value God, but in this country we worship so many trivial things... Money, sports, guns, violence, food, sex, and drugs are just a few of the things that we, as a nation, worship. And because of that worship, there is a profit to be made, and because of that profit, there is a lobby in congress for these things. Where are the lobbyists for the poor? Where are the lobbyists for our children?
These are the questions we need to be asking ourselves if we want this nation to continue to be a world leader, if we want to be an example of virtue and values. If we have to love something more than we love God, why can't it be our children; why can't it be education? In the speech this clip was taken from, Mrs Obama questions whether or not we are fulfilling our obligations to our children... Damn fine question you got there, Sweetheart, I'd like to hear more of it!!!
