Received this e-mail today from Senator Chris Coons (D. DE) regarding the Voting Rights Act:
In a few days, we’ll recognize the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington – a march for equality that remains ongoing.
This is especially true in light of the Supreme Court’s ruling to strike down a key provision of the landmark Voting Rights Act, which was one of the victories widely credited to the original March on Washington.
In striking down Section 4, the Court undid hard-fought protections preventing discrimination, opening the doors to a new round of voter ID laws and gerrymandering that segregates minority voters.
I know you’ve stood with me before to ensure the voting rights of all Americans are protected. Now, I need your voice again. Join me today in calling on Congress to act now to restore the Voting Rights Act.
We cannot let up until every American’s vote is counted.

We cannot simply wish away racial discrimination, and although we have come a long way from the era of Jim Crow, the threat of discriminatory voting practices – like voter ID laws and purging voter rolls – remains a fact of life in too many parts of this country.
Congress cannot grow complacent on this issue. As the anniversary approaches, we must act with what Dr. King called “the fierce urgency of now.”
I hope you’ll join me in delivering that message to Congress: Sign your name to the petition now:

Free and fair access to the ballot box is fundamental to our democracy. To ensure that remains true, we have to restore the full Voting Rights Act.
Best—
Chris
