As I notice the massive U.S. propaganda trying desperately to sell this ludicrous and illegal war of aggression against Syria, and I watch the almost Banana Republic-type pronouncement by public officials offering one bizarre rationale after another, I kept thinking, "Come on guys, what's the real story here?"
Of course, it's mainly about oil, geopolitics, and power plays. Folks, we're in for very interesting times; we're being duped. Where this is heading is basically towards a confrontation between the United States and Russia.
Since here in the U.S. we are trapped, prisoners of a Disney-like fantasy land (that's becoming less fun every day), and the corporate-controlled propaganda media outlets mainly peddle pablum and misinformation, it's hard to find real news, so I had to do a little digging around at international news site, and boy was I shocked (not really) with what I found.
First, let's get this whole thing about the ongoing civil war in Syria in the right perspective. Much of it is the result of US-UK covert operations as reporter by The Guardian: Syria intervention plan fueled by oil interests, not chemical weapon concern - Massacres of civilians are being exploited for narrow geopolitical competition to control Mideast oil, gas pipelines
The 2011 uprisings, it would seem - triggered by a confluence of domestic energy shortages and climate-induced droughts which led to massive food price hikes - came at an opportune moment that was quickly exploited. Leaked emails from the private intelligence firm Stratfor including notes from a meeting with Pentagon officials confirmed US-UK training of Syrian opposition forces since 2011 aimed at eliciting "collapse" of Assad's regime "from within."
What we are seeing unfolding regarding this illegal war of aggression against Syria has been on the drawing boards for years now, as
I've been arguing.
Much of the strategy currently at play was candidly described in a 2008 US Army-funded RAND report, Unfolding the Future of the Long War (pdf). The report noted that "the economies of the industrialized states will continue to rely heavily on oil, thus making it a strategically important resource." As most oil will be produced in the Middle East, the US has "motive for maintaining stability in and good relations with Middle Eastern states":
"The geographic area of proven oil reserves coincides with the power base of much of the Salafi-jihadist network. This creates a linkage between oil supplies and the long war that is not easily broken or simply characterized... For the foreseeable future, world oil production growth and total output will be dominated by Persian Gulf resources... The region will therefore remain a strategic priority, and this priority will interact strongly with that of prosecuting the long war."
~snip~
"Divide and Rule focuses on exploiting fault lines between the various Salafi-jihadist groups to turn them against each other and dissipate their energy on internal conflicts. This strategy relies heavily on covert action, information operations (IO), unconventional warfare, and support to indigenous security forces... the United States and its local allies could use the nationalist jihadists to launch proxy IO campaigns to discredit the transnational jihadists in the eyes of the local populace... US leaders could also choose to capitalize on the 'Sustained Shia-Sunni Conflict' trajectory by taking the side of the conservative Sunni regimes against Shiite empowerment movements in the Muslim world.... possibly supporting authoritative Sunni governments against a continuingly hostile Iran."
The emphasis is mine
Aren't we so nice, "exploiting fault lines," "turn them against each other,", "dissipate their energy on internal conflicts." Oh wait, are we talking about us here in the homeland? It kind of sounds familiar.
Anyways it appears that our great ally, Saudi Arabia, presented Putin with an offer they thought he couldn't refuse: Give up on Assad, and we'll make sure you enhance your position in the global oil market, or we'll let loose a few Chechen "terrorist" on your upcoming Olympics. He (Saudi Prince Bandar bin Sultan) pretty much said that to Putin! Doesn't he know Putin is a Judo master? Oh, and by-the-way, has a kick-ass military?

Bandar told Putin, “There are many common values and goals that bring us together, most notably the fight against terrorism and extremism all over the world. Russia, the US, the EU and the Saudis agree on promoting and consolidating international peace and security. The terrorist threat is growing in light of the phenomena spawned by the Arab Spring. We have lost some regimes. And what we got in return were terrorist experiences, as evidenced by the experience of the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt and the extremist groups in Libya. ... As an example, I can give you a guarantee to protect the Winter Olympics in the city of Sochi on the Black Sea next year. The Chechen groups that threaten the security of the games are controlled by us, and they will not move in the Syrian territory’s direction without coordinating with us. These groups do not scare us. We use them in the face of the Syrian regime but they will have no role or influence in Syria’s political future.”
Putin thanked King Abdullah for his greetings and Bandar for his exposition, but then he said to Bandar, “We know that you have supported the Chechen terrorist groups for a decade. And that support, which you have frankly talked about just now, is completely incompatible with the common objectives of fighting global terrorism that you mentioned. We are interested in developing friendly relations according to clear and strong principles.”
Oh no he didn't! Was the prince messing with Putin? "Give up Assad or we'll launch Chechen terrorist on you?" I don't know if that's a good idea.
So now Russia and US warships are heading to the Mediterranean...
Interfax news agency: two ships will be sent reportedly to strengthen naval presence in light of Syria crisis
Russia will send two ships to the east Mediterranean to strengthen its naval presence because of the “well-known situation” there, Interfax news agency said on Thursday referring to the Syria crisis, as the West prepares for possible military strikes and Russian citizens were evacuated from Syria.
“A large anti-submarine ship of the Northern Fleet will join [existing naval forces] over the next few days,” a source in the Russian General Staff told Interfax.
Now, if one looks at all the absurdities and contortions our government is engaging in to justify this illegal (and unilateral) war of aggression against Syria, it all makes sense.
I wonder how the rah-rah jingoists who are always happy with all the reasons we should attack third-rate countries that can't hit back would feel now.
I wish to God they just came out and told us: "We're planning to make a big move in the Middle East (another war for oil) in order to enhance our power as a country--and the profits of the MIC."
