Across Virginia scores of people, including some Republicans, are biting their nails in fear of a possible Cuccinelli governorship. This isn't as ridiculous as it sounds: off-year elections are notorious for low turnout and Virginia is no exception to the rule. The low Democratic turnout for a lacklustre Democratic candidate in 2009 was responsible for the travesty of a governor we have today--Bob ("Hand in the till") McDonnell.
The Metro (local) news section of The (soon-to-be-sold) Washington Post contains a small but interesting item. It seems that an employee in the office of Ken Cuccinelli, Virginia's current Attorney General, was fired for dissing her boss on a blog.
In a lawsuit filed late last week in federal district court in Virginia, Samantha Vanterpool claims that Cuccinelli fired her about a month after comments appeared online that called the attorney general and Virginia gubernatorial candidate an “egomaniac” who was “NEVER in the AG’s office and solely uses the position for self promotion.”
In fact Cuccinelli has used the office since Day 1 as a means of grandstanding. He's worked relentlessly to keep his name in the news, an enterprise in which he has largely succeeded--if for no other reason than demonstrating a highly questionable grasp of current issues and an egregious manner of making his views known (see his treatment of Michael Mann, a respected climate change scientist who formerly worked at the University of Virginia, in poopdogcomedy's excellent post
here).
There's still a long, hard slog for the Democrats until Election Day, November 5. But with Cuccinelli's own ex-employee turning on her former boss, one can only hope that other little gems of this kind will be unearthed. Pile them on, and they may turn into a landslide win for Terry McAuliffe.
