Sixty eight years ago today Hiroshima was destroyed by an atomic bomb. The very same day, Truman announced its use on radio to the American people. Prior to that time knowledge of its development had been a secret.

"Some of the Los Alamos scientists had circulated a petition asking President Truman to give Japan a warning and a chance to surrender before using the bomb. Some signed, some didn't, but the project remained a secret until the end."
Truman's announcement

Excerpts:-
"Sixteen hours ago an American airplane dropped one bomb on Hiroshima and destroyed its usefulness to the enemy. That bomb had more power than 20,000 tons of TNT. It had more than two thousand times the blast power of the British "Grand Slam" which is the largest bomb ever yet used in the history of warfare".........
"Before 1939, it was the accepted belief of scientists that it was theoretically possible to release atomic energy. But no one knew any practical method of doing it."...........
"The United States had available the large number of scientists of distinction in the many needed areas of knowledge. It had the tremendous industrial and financial resources necessary for the project and they could be devoted to it without undue impairment of other vital war work." ......................
"Employment during peak construction numbered 125,000 and over 65,000 individuals are even now engaged in operating the plants. Many have worked there for two and a half years. Few know what they have been producing. They see great quantities of material going in and they see nothing coming out of these plants, for the physical size of the explosive charge is exceedingly small. We have spent two billion dollars on the greatest scientific gamble in history -- and won."....................................
"But the greatest marvel is not the size of the enterprise, its secrecy, nor its cost, but the achievement of scientific brains in putting together infinitely complex pieces of knowledge held by many men in different fields of science into a workable plan" .......
"It has never been the habit of the scientists of this country or the policy of this government to withhold from the world scientific knowledge. Normally, therefore, everything about the work with atomic energy would be made public.
But under the present circumstances it is not intended to divulge the technical processes of production or all the military applications. Pending further examination of possible methods of protecting us and the rest of the world from the danger of sudden destruction."
President Truman's announcement is well worth reading in toto. Videos are also available. What it tells us very clearly is what a large percentage of the American population already suspects and maybe believes; namely that the American government is capable of a successful cover-up over a number of years involving thousands of people at all levels of society. It also tells us that given enough "reasons" the secrecy will continue.
I spent some time imagining what it might be like if there had been no Presidential Announcement, and I suspect that there would have been great societal unrest. As it is, the announcement is a marvel of speech writing, appealing to the American sense of exceptionalism. Not that that is necessarily bad. Some very difficult decisions had to be made. I cannot imagine having to make any of them. Some horrific concepts had to be presented to a largely unsuspecting American public in as short a time as it takes to make a speech. Some very powerful rhetoric had to be used. It was masterfully accomplished.
Now turn to the current times and to an oftentimes very contentious topic. 911. Something horrendous happened. An immediate announcement blamed Al-Qaeda and Muslim terrorists. With time, it is seen by many if not most Americans that the official explanation could not possibly be true. But there is a great deal of dissension. Fighting between people who supposedly are on the same side. The idea of a different form of energy from anything we have seen before has been ridiculed by all sides, and people drawing attention to it have been marginalized. Yet the atomic bomb was accepted the same day it happened as explanation for Hiroshima.
Nikola Tesla who was inspiration for hundreds of scientists who worked on new forms of energy, free energy, infinite energy, whatever name is currently accepted, was born in 1856. That is 157 years ago. Suppression, persecution and theft of information, disappearance of applications for copyrights, and even murder have prevented open research on the subject. I would think that all we need to do is think of creations of suns, destruction of solar systems, black holes and other celestial wonders, to KNOW that energy more powerful than atomic energy exists. Yet the concept of free energy is STILL not universally accepted. And I remember being taught in high school that scientists should keep an open mind!
If in President Truman's time it was possible for the government to keep such a huge secret under wraps for years, then why is it so impossible for us to believe that the government (or an equivalently powerful and wealthy group) could replicate such a thing today? in common with suppression techniques, intimidation, planted shills, etc to create fear in the heart of those who ask "too many questions". We need to keep an open mind. We need to have the courage to examine all evidence with an open mind.
