Received this e-mail from Senator Al Franken (D. MN) today on the latest news regarding a potential government shutdown:
Breaking news: Republicans in the House took another step in their effort to do a dumb thing for the worst possible reason.
They’re now officially demanding that we defund Obamacare if we want to keep the government from shutting down.
Shutting down the government would cost us jobs and create havoc in our economy. That’s why 44,836 people have already signed my petition calling on Washington Republicans not to go through with this plan.
Clearly, we need to get louder -- and fast. Please add your name to this important petition today:

The far right wants to hand us two options: Either defund Obamacare and leave millions of Americans without access to affordable health care, or let them shut down the government.
This is not how reasonable people behave. And yet, that’s the plan Republicans in the House are going with.
Will they get away with it? Can Republicans really shut down the government because they can’t stand seeing young people staying on their parents’ insurance, seniors paying less for prescriptions, and insurance companies being held accountable for the way they spend our money?
It all depends on whether we can force them to give up this ridiculous plan.
Let’s pump this petition up and get it to 50,000 signers. Click here to add your name today.

Thanks for helping me stop this.
Al
P.S.: If everyone who receives this email took just 30 seconds to sign this petition, we could really grow this movement -- and maybe even stop the GOP from shutting down the government over Obamacare. So please add your name today.

I also received a fundraising e-mail today from the great Senator Tammy Baldwin (D. WI) is support of Senator Franken's 2014 re-election bid:
No one runs for the Senate alone. And I count myself lucky for all the amazing support I received during my race last year -- from my Wisconsin grassroots team and from my friend and colleague from Minnesota, Senator Al Franken.
Al is facing a pretty tough re-election campaign and he could really use our help. Will you chip in $5 or more to help a great Minnesota Democrat before this month’s FEC Deadline?

Wisconsin and Minnesota share more than just a border. We have a strong commitment to common sense, practical solutions, progressive values, and we care deeply about our middle class. And we need more people like Al fighting for those values in the Senate.
Al is a passionate guy who works really hard for Minnesota and the middle class. He’s a leader when it comes to financial reform in Washington, and making sure that all Americans have access to affordable healthcare. And (despite the fact that he’s a Vikings fan), I think you should help him out.
September 30th is the FEC fundraising deadline. Pitch in $5, $10, or whatever you can afford to help him blow past his $175,000 goal by the end of the month.

Sincerely,
Tammy
