You know how when you read a diary and don’t really have anything to add so you throw a T&R in the comment box and then maybe a pithy quote in the comment body? So I was reading Major Kong’s diary about his helping out a young man who was down and out and added the quote from the title. Ends up with 46 recommends! Thanks for the Mojo ‘cause I’ve sorta run out of original thoughts lately.
Over the years I’ve collected acquired quite a full quote bag, some are heavy; some are funny and some enlightening. They get triggered all the time here as I spend my early (I’m talking 4-5AM) mornings drinking coffee and pursuing entries that might pique my interest. The same goes for all the songs I have in my head.
Re: the quote, "Everybody counts or nobody counts". It is the personal credo of LAPD detective Hieronymus "Harry" Bosch, a fictional character created by author Michael Connelly. I admit I am a fan of hard boiled detective novels, so sue me! Because of Harry’s code of honor, he is always getting in trouble with the brass and IA. The Wiki link above has a pretty good synopsis of him.
The problem for Harry is that he is relentless. Doesn’t matter if the victim is young or old, rich or poor, a prostitute or movie star. It could be the original perp who is then killed by a third party. They all count.
Which brings me back to Major Kong’s diary.
It was just a short anecdotal story that reflected the sorry state of affairs we find ourselves in. We all have had these encounters. How we respond is up to us. Hopefully we can learn from Major Kong and allow our better angels (at least MK’s) to look beyond what has become the cynical and respond with caring because "Everybody counts or nobody counts".
