According to HuffingtonPostCongress is readying a bill that will repeal the Cost Of Living Adjustment (COLA) for disabled vets. While I applaud such effort, it still leaves the rest of the veteran population below age 62 vulnerable to the COLA cut, which is scheduled to take effect in Jan 2016. Congress will create an --us-- and --them-- veteran population if the COLA cut remains intact.
I would also hope news reporters do a bit of research before publishing such an article. HuffPost copies almost verbatim Rep Paul Ryans (R-WI) fact-free US Today article:
....a typical serviceman who retirees at 38 would receive a $1.7 million pension over his lifetime instead of a $1.8 million benefit and that most military retirees go on to second careers.
Good reporting would have challenged such an assertion. Had they done so they would have found out that those large numbers Mr Ryan threw around are incorrect. Those dollar amounts are not typical for a retiring service member.
By the way, mil retirement pay is not a benefit. It is deferred compensation.
