Life with high pollution isn't free
China's 'airpocalypse' kills 350,000 to 500,000 each year
I've been sitting on this story for a week or more. I have actually been waiting for a diary to show up. Anyway the story speaks for itself. There is little I can add. This is why we fight with the right wing.
The estimate that the authors quoted, however, is lower than the 2010 Global Burden of Disease Study, also published in the Lancet, which estimated that airborne particles smaller than 2.5 microns in diameter (PM2.5) caused 1.2 million premature deaths in China in 2010 alone.
And it will be decades before they get the pollution under control. The lives lost are meaningless to China. Here there would be "hell to pay".
Village family-planning officers vigilantly chart the menstrual cycle and pelvic-exam results of every woman of childbearing age in their area. If a woman gets pregnant without permission and is unable to pay the often exorbitant fine for violating the policy, she risks being subjected to a forced abortion.
