Received this e-mail from Senate Brian Schatz (D. HI) regarding raising the minimum wage:
As your Senator, I will always stand up for Hawaii values -- and that means making sure that hardworking people across the state earn enough money to support their families.
Here in Hawaii, we have an incredibly high cost of living; Honolulu was recently ranked as having the least affordable housing market out of any city in the entire United States, and the 3rd least affordable market in the world. With 14,000 workers in Hawaii earning the federal minimum wage at $7.25 an hour or less, they just can’t make ends meet.
For workers earning minimum wage -- many of whom live below the poverty line -- one or two or even three minimum wage jobs just can’t keep their families afloat. People who show up and work hard every day, providing vital services we need like caring for the elderly, fixing cars, and ringing up cash registers, should be able to support their families. In order to keep these families afloat, we’ve got to raise the federal minimum wage for millions of American workers.

When I was in the state legislature, I repeatedly supported increases to the state minimum wage. And I’m proud to bring this fight to the U.S. Senate.
The Fair Minimum Wage Act would give nearly 28 million Americans a raise, and pull millions of families out of poverty. These people work hard, and play by the rules, and they deserve to be able to support their families -- and raising the minimum wage to $10.10 per hour is essential.
Raising the minimum wage would also be a big step towards achieving pay equity for women. Nearly two-thirds of minimum wage workers are women; and 71% of tipped workers -- like servers in restaurants -- are women. Raising the federal minimum wage, including the wage for tipped workers, is something we must do to ensure equal pay for women.

For the 113,000 Hawaii families that would directly or indirectly see raises due to this legislation, paying the rent and putting food on the table will be that much easier. These are the Hawaii values that I’m proud to stand up for in the U.S. Senate.
Thank you for standing up for our families and our communities.
Mahalo,
Brian Schatz
U.S. Senator
