Sniff
Poor Chris Christie. It seems that being the head of the Republican Governors Association (RGA) isn't going
very well for Gov. Bridgegate:
His aides refuse to disclose the location of his fund-raising appearances, and the Republican candidates for whom he is raising money seem reluctant to stand beside him in public. In Florida a few weeks ago, Gov. Rick Scott was driven into the back entrance of an event with Mr. Christie, to avoid gathered reporters and demonstrators. [...]
There is a growing recognition among governors association donors and state Republican officials that the investigations surrounding Mr. Christie and his inner circle were making it harder for him to operate as the organization’s public face.
Now some might attribute all this to a politically motivated, massive traffic jam engineered by a top aide in his office and carried out by one of his minions at the Port Authority, followed by absolute denials of any involvement, then acknowledgement of his office's involvement, then having the former minion taking the Fifth, who then said that evidence exists proving that Christie knew about the traffic jam, which led to the governor attacking his high school buddy, which led to ... who knows what next? Oh, and don't forget the "alleged acts of political revenge" coming out of Hoboken and Jersey City.
But leave it to The New York Times to find the real culprits for this fall from grace:
Democratic Party operatives have churned out 11 different videos depicting Gov. Chris Christie of New Jersey as a revenge-happy gridlock maker who cannot keep his story straight ... They are unleashing attacks ... they are coordinating strategy at the highest levels of the party ... Democrats are determined to transform him into a toxic figure, whose name is synonymous with the ugliest elements of politics: partisan bullying and backslapping cronyism ... The onslaught — some of it spontaneous, some coordinated — threatens to turn Mr. Christie’s tenure into a distraction, rather than the low-risk steppingstone that aides had envisioned.
Damn those Democrats for greasing Chris Christie's stepping stone to the White House by talking about Chris Christie.
But cheer up, Chris. Nothing says you have to serve out your term at the RGA:
If Christie steps down, he wouldn't be the first to leave the position. Former South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford was ousted after secret visits to his mistress in Argentina were exposed.
