Some of you may remember Mitt Romney. He was the man, that despite spending nearly one billion dollars of corporate funds, could not defeat a Kenyan Muslim Marxist Terrorist. He was also the man that said 47% of undeseriable people in American steal money from real Americans like him.
He was also the person who lobbied to have congress transfer $1.5 billion dollars from the American Taxpayer to his pet project, the 2002 SLC Olympics. He explained, to those of us that were too dumb to understand why we had to pay for his Olympics, that the Olympics is simply expensive, and things like roads had to be built. Oh, we did not know that taxes paid for things like roads, that we all use. We thought the taxes were used to buy SUVs for welfare mums.
It may be surprising to some that Sports Illustrated reported that much of these funds were used to payoff wealthy donors in Utah. I am sure that none of these donors were part of the funding for his presidential campaign.
But what is even more surprising is that what he has to say about the current Olympics in Russia. He says that it indefensible that $50 billion are being spent to put on the Olympics.
“Olympic sport can be demonstrated at $2 billion or $3 billion, and all that extra money could be used to do some very important things in terms of fighting poverty and fighting disease around the world.”
Isn't he the newly minted Humanitarian. It is
wrong to spend so much money on sport when there are poor people and diseases that need help. And spending more than a few billion is wrong.
Now, it is true that Mitt Romney's Olympics did probably cost less than $3 billion. It is also true that much of that money was borrowed by the Federal Government, and thus contributed to the deficit that he wants to blame on Obama. It is also true that the cost of his Olympics was at least , somewhere in the neighborhood of $2.5 billion, was double the cost of the previous Olympics. It will also go down in history as the lamest opening ceremony with the lamest torch. We can be proud that penny pinching resulting in the embarrassment of America.
Just as another data point, the Atlanta Olympics in 1996 cost right around $2 billion in 2002 dollars, with about half a billion dollars in federal subsidy.
I hope this is a new trend for Mitt Romney. A man who is now against using taxpayer money to reward friends, and for the use of taxpayer money to help the poor and sick.
