A diary that displays blatant bigotry has been elevated to the top of Community Spotlight. And I protest. The diary is this one:
Cubanos - like Rubio and Cruz - are the GOP's House Latinos [...] I cringe every time I see them characterized as Hispanics or Latinos, which they are in name only. It is a source of some satirical fun that 'Rubio' is Spanish for blonde. The distinction between Cubanos and other Latinos is lost on most Anglos. Selling them as Latinos may make GOP Anglos feel better. It does nothing for other Latinos, however.
While the diary makes the important point that Cubans, in some measure, less than before, have different priorities (in part because of their preferred immigration status, in part, though not mentioned in the diary, because of their strong anti-Castro, anti-Communist sentiments (pretty meaningless in this era)), it chooses to do so in an offensive manner, at least offensive to me (I am Cuban American.)
FTR, Cuban Americans are strong supporters of immigration reform, including a path to citizenship.
FTR, Cuban Americans are becoming much less adherent to the GOP.
FTR, there are Democratic Cuban American officeholders, including New Jersey Senator Bob Menendez and Rep Joe Garcia. Both command strong support from all Latinos.
The disgraceful bigotry demonstrated in that diary should not be countenanced by this community, much less spotlighted.
Imo of course.
